Winter Driving Tips to Combat the Extremes

In recent days, the US has been bombarded with stories regarding the Polar Vortex and its resulting harsh weather patterns. Some have wondered what is this polar vortex? Is it a fancy new term for El Nino. To find out what this new buzzword encompasses please check out Climate.gov

In certain North American locations, such as Lake County, IN, Drivers have been warned to avoid driving  due to hazardous road conditions. Road Condition Advisory In such cases, the operators of the vehicles were asked to stay home for their own safety. Authorized emergency response vehicles were the only cars recommended to be out on those slippery roads. Currently,  there is a warning in effect NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE Warning for parts of the country.

How can you receive current updates on the weather and road conditions for your area? Regarding weather updates in your local area, you can find your locations hour by hour forecast on The Weather Channel  and various local weather sites. For a more in depth idea of current precipitation, warnings in effect and so on, check out WEATHER.GOV. Here on the West Coast, sites like Cal Trans are useful tools that provide live video feeds of the roads you may use for an upcoming trip or commute to work. Some Smartphone user have even found the Google Now weather widget to be very handy, as it can be adjusted by hour.
Driving safely on winter roads is another chief concern. AAA offers an excellent list of safe winter driving tips. Some of the precautions mentioned include not warming a vehicle in an enclosed environment. Unfortunately, many have been poisoned  or worse this way. Also, ensuring your gas tank is at-least half full at all times during cold weather prevents the gas line form freezing up. Remember just because you are a good winter driver, doesn't mean everyone else out there is. Please stay safe.

Self Driving Car in nəˈvædə

Chris Gerdes Director for the Center of Automotive Research at Stanford, gave a talk at the TEDxStanford. His main point was that if a car was to be completely autonomous, it should at least be comparable with the very best human driver. This in turn means it should be able to reach high speeds without flinching. His claim is that that a vehicle should be able to go upward of 150 MPH without error.

During his time on TED , Chris made mention of Futurama, an exhibit at the 1939 World's Fair. Contrary to popular opinion, this is not merely a Matt Groening directed cartoon. The Futurama exhibit was sponsored by GM who at the time promoted self driving vehicle as part of a futuristic society.

Real life examples of Autonomous car driving include the one mentioned in the video. Google obtained the right to "Drive" their car in the Sate of Nevada. Just for Chris Gerdes reference,we pronounce it nəˈvædə not the other way. You can check out the info on how Google obtained licensing for that particular project
